THE long course season got off to a bright start for Tynemouth ASC swimmers, who took to the 50m pool at Sunderland Aquatic Centre for the COSASC New Year Meet – with some swimming competitively over that distance for the very first time.

And TASC swimmers proved they were up to the task with some big performances in the big pool against some big teams from far and wide in this age-at-end-of-year gala, Tynemouth finishing in second spot in the medals table with an impressive total of 19 golds, 11 silvers and four bronze medals, plus there were some superb pbs posted as well.

Abby Coventry (11) secured four of those golds in the 10/11 years age group with success in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events, plus she took top spot in the 200IM, and bagged five silver medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, and in the 50m and 100m backstroke.

In the 12 years age group, Freya Beach (still 11) hit her rivals for six with an impressive haul of a half-dozen golds, leading the way in the 50m, 100m and 200m back, and 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly, adding a silver in the 50m free and bronze in the 100m free for good measure.

Aidan Turner (12) continued his excellent form with another four golds in the 13 years age group, winning the 100m and 400m free, 100m breast and 200IM, and bagged a couple of silvers in the 50m and 200m free.

There were more golds in the 14 years age group, Niamh Savory (13) taking a hat-trick of them with success in the 50m fly, 200IM and 400IM, while Jamie Beach (13) bagged a silver in the 50m fly and Ruby Dann (13) took bronze in the 50m fly.

Katie Coventry (14) won gold at the double in the 15 years category, winning the 100m and 200m breast, plus secured a silver in the 50m breast, while Jack Kelso (15) took a couple of bronze medals in the 100m and 200m breast.
